Even Flow song info

Even Flow is one of the most famous Pearl Jam songs. It appears on their first album, "Ten" (1991) and it's also released as a single in 1992. Even Flow is infamous for its fantastic riff (one of my all time favourites, btw) and interesting lyrics. Even Flow was written by Stone Gossard and Eddie Vedder, and it's actually Pearl Jam's most performed live song.

Beacuse of contstant performances, live versions of Even Flow today are quite different than those back in the 1992. They tend to play it really fast (I don't like it that way, but who asks me). Some fans claim that, after all these years, they're bored by this song, while others just can't have enough.

As you probaly know, there are two versions of the song. Another version was recorded in 1992 with drummer Dave Abbruzzese. This version is used for the video, and it's usually considered "a better one" (heavier riffs if you ask me, that's why). This version was included in Pearl Jam greatest hits album. Two videos have been shot for the song. The original was replaced with a clip from a performance show because band didn't like the original one.

Meanings

Pearl Jam rarely explain their songs. I guess they want fans to interpret songs any way they like. So, it's impossible to say what Even Flow is REALLY about (Really, meaning "what Eddie wanted to say with his lyrics"). But that does not matter at all, beacuse listeners give songs new meanings, and those meanings are "real". To me, Even Flow is not just a song with a killer riff, it reminds me of some complicated things and one of my favourite novels, "Steppenwolf". But I'm not trying to say that Eddie wrote about it. Honestly, I don't care what he wanted to say with the song, I stick to my interpretation.

However, if you're still interested in "true" meaning, Even Flow is usually interpreted as a song about homelessness and someone's really hard times, but with a hope for a new start. Some people say it's about social injustice in today's world. But, like I said, it can mean anything YOU want it to mean.

Lyrics

By Eddie Vedder. As seen on the official site, though usually he alters them a bit when performing.

Freezin', rests his head on a pillow made of concrete, again
Oh, feelin' maybe he'll see a little better, set a days, ooh yeah
Oh, hand out, faces that he sees time again ain't that familiar,
oh yeah
Oh, dark grin, he can't help, when he's happy looks insane, oh yeah

Even flow, thoughts arrive like butterflies
Oh, he don't know, so he chases them away
Someday yet, he'll begin his life again
Life again, life again...

Kneelin', looking through the paper though he doesn't know to read, ooh yeah
Oh, prayin', now to something that has never showed him anything
Oh, feelin', understands the weather of the winters on its way
Oh, ceilings, few and far between all the legal halls of shame, yeah

Even flow, thoughts arrive like butterflies
Oh, he don't know, so he chases them away
Someday yet, he'll begin his life again
Whispering hands, gently lead him away
Him away, him away...
Yeah!
Woo...ah yeah...fuck it up...

Even flow, thoughts arrive like butterflies
Oh, he don't know, so he chases them away
Someday yet, he'll begin his life again, yeah
Oh, whispering hands, gently lead him away
Him away, him away...
Yeah!
Woo...uh huh...yeah, yeah, fuck em up again...
