Tiana (Anika Noni Rose) is a 19-year-old waitress in New Orelans, whose biggest dream is to own her own restaurant one day. She is an idependent, hard working girl, who believes wishing upon a star isn't enough- only hard work can make your dreams come true. Tiana has two jobs and no time for fun; she doesn't spend much time with her friends, and finding love isn't her priority. However, throughout the course of the film she learns that she also needs her true love, Naveen.
Prince Naveen (Bruno Campos) of fictional country Maldonia, comes to New Orleans to explore city's jazz scene. He is charming, but a bit lazy and a womanizer. He meets the shady Dr. Facilier who transforms him into a frog. Naveen needs a princess to kiss him, but he finds someone even better- Tiana, who will teach him the importance of hard work and true love.
Dr Facilier (Keith David) is the main antagonist. He is a powerfull voodoo magician who tricks Naveen into making a deal with him that turns the prince into a frog. His goal is to become the richest man in New Orleans, but is dependent on his "friends from the other side". His shadow is able to move of its own free will and move objects, and it's clear that Dr Facilier is somewhat afraid of his friends "from the other side", due to his debt with them.
Charlotte "Lottie" La Bouff
Charlotte (Jennifer Cody) is a spoiled, but good hearted 18-year-old southern débutante. Charlotte is Tiana's best friend, and her main goal is to marry a prince and be a princess. Charlotte is the main source for comic relief in the film.
Louis (Michael-Leon Wooley) is a jazz-singing alligator who plays the trumpet. His dream is to become human so he can join a jazz band. He did try to play jazz as an alligator, but humans were too afraid of him.
Ray (Jim Cummings) is a lovesick Cajun firefly who knows Mama Odie and offers to help the frogs get to her. Ray is in love with the Evening Star, which he named "Evangeline" and thinks is another firefly.
Mama Odie (Jenifer Lewis) is a 197-year-old, blind voodoo priestess who lives in the bayou. She owns a pet snake named JuJu. Mama Odie cooks gumbo in a huge bathtub in her home and is able to see the past, present and future in its swirls.
Lawrence (Peter Bartlett) is Prince Naveen's pompous valet who is jealous of Naveen's fame and life. Dr. Facilier convinces him to become his ally after he predicts through tarot cards that in his future he would be "the man he always wanted to be".
James (Terrence Howard) and Eudora (Oprah Winfrey) are Tiana's parents. James is the one who instilled work ethics on Tiana. He died when she was young, probably during World War I. Tiana's mother, Eudora, is proud of her daughter's hard work, but she'd love to see her falling in love.
Eli "Big Daddy" La Bouff
Eli "Big Daddy" La Bouff (John Goodman) is Charlotte's father. He is a wealthy but friendly sugar mill owner and one of the richest men in town.
